One of my favorite jumping spiders was bouncing around a wood chip pile this weekend. This is a habronattus coecatus. This one looks smaller than most of the ones I’ve seen. All photos taken at the Chesapeake Arboretum with my Canon 5dII, Mp-e65, and Mt-24 EX.
And here is the smallest Salticid I’ve never seen. That is on a flower petal inside a flower. Maybe 2mm at most in length.
For the first time in a few weeks, I found a Salticid. Three, actually, but the others will have to wait. I saw this amazing spider at the Chesapeake Aboretum, on a pile of wood. It is a male Habronattus coecatus, which I’ve never seen before. He was very impressed with a female nearby Salticid, but she was not interested in his advances. Note the olive green color of his 3rd legs. Such a beautiful spider.
All photos taken with a Canon 5d Mark 2, Canon Mp-e 65mm lens, Canon mt-24ex flash, and a home made diffuser (I just made it, more on that in the future).
We had some great weather this weekend — good enough that I decided to meed my dad at the Chesapeake Arboretum. It was quite windy so finding spiders on plants wasn’t very likely. Instead I just went to my favorite spot, a huge mulch pile in the parking lot. I’ve seen all kinds of interesting things on this pile — snakes, frogs, centipedes, and of course spiders.
I happened to see my favorite jumping spider, a male Habronattus coecatus. I’ve only ever seen them at this location, and specifically on this mulch pile. What a lucky day.
He was quite shy and took about 10 minutes to come out from hiding.
2013 was an awesome year for my photography. I had some chances to explore astrophotography, I made some significant modifications to my gear, and I learned a lot about perfecting the light sources for my macro work. Here is a summary of my 20 or so best shots from the year.
All photos taken with my Canon 5dII. Macro shots with my Canon mpe-65 with the mt-24EX flash, and wide angle shots were taken with my Canon 24-70mmL.

Choosing my best and favorite photo from 2013 was tough. Since macro and spiders are my real passion, I had to go with these from my awesome day at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens
The weather of 2013 was largely crappy, so I didn’t get out with my telescopes but a few times. I did manage to snap this photo of M42, the Orion Nebula.
I got a few great photos of the Norfolk Skyline this year as well. Here is my favorite, taken in July.
I spent a weekend at Cumberland Island, one of my favorite places. The trees there are amazing, especially in the early morning sun.
I also started a few studio based macro projects. I’ve only published one, but I have two ideas to work on this winter.
I did a few timelapses as well. Here’s one of a spider building a web at Cumberland Island.

And here’s one of Jupiter, Orion, and Sirius rising from Medoc State Park in NC.

And the rest here are a mixture of my favorites. Enjoy!
This female salticid was avoiding the advances of this male Habronattus coecatus on a pile of logs. She had caught a small fly but his advances were aggressive enough she dropped it to avoid him.
All photos taken with a Canon 5d Mark 2, Canon Mp-e 65mm lens, and a diffused Canon mt-24ex flash.
And here is another rather unique looking spider I found on the same woodpile.
