a Photography and Science Blog
Had a great weekend of photography recently, I saw 4 adult jumping spiders on one plant. This one is a male Paraphidippus aurantius. He was not shy in the least, posing for me and looking right at me on quite a few occasions.
What a pretty crab spider I found in the garden at my parents’ house in Chesapeake, Va. She was very shy, and kept moving away from me when I approached. She was quite small, body length of around 6mm. The kind folks over at bugguide.net identified her; I initially thought she was a Goldenrod Spider, but the inverted ‘V’ on her back gives her away.
For the first time in a few weeks, I found a Salticid. Three, actually, but the others will have to wait. I saw this amazing spider at the Chesapeake Aboretum, on a pile of wood. It is a male Habronattus coecatus, which I’ve never seen before. He was very impressed with a female nearby Salticid, but she was not interested in his advances. Note the olive green color of his 3rd legs. Such a beautiful spider.
All photos taken with a Canon 5d Mark 2, Canon Mp-e 65mm lens, Canon mt-24ex flash, and a home made diffuser (I just made it, more on that in the future).
I spent my Friday with coworker Randy Tracy (and his Canon 35mm Lens) aboard a Wasp Aircraft Carrier for Opsail 2012. Lighting conditions were less than ideal (shooting directly in to the sun) but the progression of ships was stunning. I took over 400 photos on the ship, and it was tough to narrow down the best.
All photos taken with my Canon 5d Mark 2, and the Canon 35mm F/1.4L lens. If you would like to use my images, please email me, keegan at keeganm.com

The day started with a flag raising
This weekend was full of photography. From spending Friday on a Wasp Aircraft Carrier, to shooting the Milky Way in Back Bay, finding bugs, taking panoramic shots of Norfolk, and seeing the fireworks, I filled my SD cards multiple times. Big thanks to Randy Tracy for letting me borrow his Canon 35mm f/2.4 L. What an awesome lens!
Below is a series of photos I took Saturday evening. I was in Portsmouth, VA for the Norfolk Harborfest / OpSail 2012 fireworks show, and what an awesome show it was. Three barges, synchronized, shooting off an amazing display.

First, some panoramas of Norfolk. These are heavily compressed, I can provide higher quality digital copies on request (for wallpapers or other personal use)
I think this the single coolest shot of the weekend. This was the only photo I took with all three barges in sync, and with my favorite color, no less.
Here are the rest of the fireworks.
